If Chung Cheong-rae is elected and we move to a cabinet system

The overheated aspect of the Democratic Party of Korea's leadership election is a phenomenon that has emerged because the president is Lee Jae-myung. Jung Chung-rae's side, which is trying to gain an advantage by saying it's only a one-year term, is uneasy about people's eyes digging into the essence, dreaming of the desire for power of a few specific people, not just anyone, true to the overheated nature of politics in this nation. The watermelons, who saw a prosecutor general who should have been Moon Jae-in's confidant rise to the presidency with the people-handling skills of a prostitute, have grown their dreams even bigger. Originally, Koreans are smart and quick. Because everyone knows that they can rise to that position and do it, Jung Chung-rae's heart would not have valued the position of chairman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee. Just looking at his attitude of running for party leader without finishing his term, his true intentions are proven and remain. However, the public mistakenly thought that Jung Chung-rae, who does not spare wonderful words, was a loyalist helping Lee Jae-myung. Of course, people who can read faces can recognize that he is not that great of a person, but the media is looking for a messenger to maintain vested interests with all sorts of strategies. That is Jung Chung-rae.
If we infer only from the rumors circulating, Yoo Si-min is behind all of this. In the first place, Kim Min-seok, who was supposed to become the party leader, left after refusing the Prime Minister position chosen by Lee Jae-myung. So, Park Chan-dae, who is faithful to the manual and quiet, had no choice but to run for party leader without charisma. Of course, Yoo Si-min's righteous words during the three years of the prostitute regime and his attitude during the impeachment were excellent, and it is clear that he is the person to remain as Prime Minister. Whether it was not a persistent request or whether the rumor of Yoo Si-min's refusal was not true, I cannot know everything, but as a fan of Yoo Si-min, I am very sorry that he did not help Lee Jae-myung to keep that position alone.
Seeing Kim Byung-ki, the floor leader who says he will cooperate ethically without thinking about disbanding the powerless People Power Party, it is clear that our public has no talent to discern the duplicity of politicians. Candidate Chung Cheong-rae is being mentioned as a strong candidate. If Representative Chung Cheong-rae is elected as the party leader, this could signal a significant change in the power structure and direction within the Democratic Party, going beyond a simple change of personnel. In particular, among party members, there are deep concerns about the so-called 'Watermelon Season 2'.
Jeong Cheong-rae does not appear to be a core aide to Lee Jae-myung on the surface. Looking closely at his political roots and relationships, it is difficult to see him as simply a 'pro-Lee monochromatic'. He has deep ties with former pro-Moon figures such as Kim Eo-jun, and has long maintained a certain rapport with pro-Moon supporters with 'impromptu strong remarks' as his weapon. Of particular note is Jeong Cheong-rae's political trajectory. He started his political career in the 17th National Assembly with the Uri Party, and has since been at the center of major political changes within the party, from the Grand Unified Democratic New Party and the United Democratic Party to the current Democratic Party of Korea. This experience suggests that he may be more adept at political opportunism than simple factional loyalty. As a result, after being elected party leader, he is likely to play a role as a platform for the de facto re-consolidation of the pro-Moon faction, rather than actually leading the pro-Lee forces, by advocating 'two-legged politics' or a 'pro-Moon-pro-Lee balancing strategy'. Seeing Kim Moon-soo, who is embroiled in sexual harassment allegations, holding a press conference to run as a disappearing opposition party leader, it seems that Jeong Cheong-rae may have had a grand plan. This could be a new variation of the inter-factional conflicts that the Democratic Party has experienced in the past.
What is even more concerning is the behind-the-scenes power struggle that could occur under the Chung Chung-rae regime. Although they may outwardly claim to be 'protecting Representative Lee Jae-myung,' in reality, there could be subtle manipulation of public opinion, media play, and internal consolidation aimed at a cabinet system amendment or the restoration of pro-Moon factions. In the past, pro-Moon factions have used the media and public opinion to seize control within the party. The reason why there is talk of 'Watermelon Season 2' is the fear of a recurrence of this strategy. In particular, considering that the term 'watermelon' itself is an expression used by Lee Jae-myung's supporters to criticize pro-Moon figures as 'different on the inside and outside,' Chung Chung-rae's election ironically creates a situation where he could become the target of such criticism.
Another change expected if Chung Cheong-rae becomes the party leader is the party's organizational operation method. Looking at his past remarks and actions, he has a clear tendency to prefer strong confrontational politics. This is likely to lead to an operation method that values unilateral organizational mobilization rather than internal party discussions and agreements. This change can suppress the diverse voices within the Democratic Party and ultimately lead to a retreat of democracy within the party. In particular, as the voices of young or moderate lawmakers are reduced, there is a risk that the party will become subordinate to the interests of a specific group. The Korean political sentiment and climate, which does not properly cultivate young people who initially enter politics from the bottom up, is also a spark that will drive the future of Korea to ruin.
Park Chan-dae, who garnered attention in this party leadership election, has not been chosen by core pro-Lee Jae-myung supporters due to his moderate and quiet image. It's hard to believe that the two are the same age, as he seems to have a moderate temperament. The public originally likes actors and idols, so perhaps they are not easily drawn to Park Chan-dae, who has no script or agency. If Jung Cheong-rae wins and Park Chan-dae loses, this could lead to the decline of the 'rational pro-Lee Jae-myung' or 'moderate reform' faction within the Democratic Party, and the revival of personal politics and factional politics centered around Jung Cheong-rae. Park Chan-dae's defeat could be a symbolic event that reveals the limitations of the moderate reform faction within the Democratic Party, beyond just an individual's political failure.
This will bring significant changes not only to the party's presidential election strategy but also to the future nomination landscape, parliamentary response methods, and media strategy. Furthermore, the risk of this scenario is the possibility that Chung Cheong-rae will be tempted to build his own power base rather than helping Representative Lee Jae-myung. Even though he is a single-term representative with a one-year term, the organizational control and media exposure he has built during this period can have a significant impact on the next nomination rights and presidential primary structure. In particular, Chung Cheong-rae already has considerable political experience and networks as a four-term lawmaker. If he further solidifies this foundation through the party leadership, a subtle competitive relationship with Representative Lee Jae-myung may form. This carries the risk of creating a political structure of 'same bed, different dreams', cooperating on the surface but checking each other internally.
One of Chung Cheong-rae's political characteristics is a high sense of media and public opinion. He has consistently highlighted his presence through social media and media interviews, which is also his political asset. However, if he becomes the party leader, this ability may rather become a factor amplifying internal conflicts within the party. In particular, Chung Cheong-rae has caused controversy in the past with strong remarks. If this tendency continues as the party leader, there is a risk that the image of the Democratic Party will be solidified as a 'hard-line party'. This may conflict with the strategic goal of expanding the center, and ultimately limit the possibility of winning elections.
If Chung Cheong-rae becomes the party leader, the most important variable is the operation of the nomination rights. Looking at his past actions, he is likely to prefer nominations based on factional logic. This can lead to nominations that prioritize political loyalty over ability and qualifications, which ultimately risks weakening the party's competitiveness. In addition, strategic calculations in consideration of the next presidential election cannot be ignored. Through the party leadership, Chung Cheong-rae may want to strengthen his political standing and gain a favorable position in the upcoming presidential primary. This implies the possibility of a conflict with Lee Jae-myung's re-election strategy.
In the end, the Democratic Party is once again in danger of falling into the trap of factional politics. Jung Chung-rae's election may seem like a victory for the pro-Lee Jae-myung faction on the surface, but in reality, it could be the beginning of a new form of factional conflict. This is because a new power bloc centered on Jung Chung-rae may be formed, going beyond the traditional pro-Moon Jae-in - pro-Lee Jae-myung structure. This change could weaken the party's solidarity and mean a return to politics centered on people and factions rather than policies. In particular, if young lawmakers and figures from civil society are alienated from this structure, the Democratic Party's future-oriented development potential will inevitably be greatly limited.
A particularly noteworthy aspect of the Chung Cheong-rae system is the direction of constitutional amendment discussions. He has shown interest in a cabinet system amendment since the past, and if he becomes the party leader, there is a possibility that he will promote it in earnest. However, it can raise doubts as to whether these constitutional amendment discussions originate from a pure intention to improve the system or are for the political interests of a specific group. In particular, since a cabinet system amendment fundamentally changes the existing power structure formed under the presidential system, a thorough review of the true intentions of the forces promoting it is necessary. If these constitutional amendment discussions are used as a means for the political reinstatement of the pro-Moon faction, it would be a clear example of 'watermelon politics'.
While Jung Chung-rae's political style may be appealing to hard-core supporters, it is likely to be perceived as burdensome to the general public. His direct and aggressive speaking style can amplify political conflict, which can lead to a decline in public trust in the Democratic Party. Especially in the current situation where political conflict is acute, messages of unity and harmony are more important, and it is questionable whether Jung Chung-rae's leadership can meet these demands. Rather, there are concerns that it may exacerbate political polarization and adversely affect the development of democracy.
The true leader who protects President Lee Jae-myung should not be someone who simply shows loyalty, but someone with philosophical consistency and strategic sense who can lead the party's identity and the spirit of the times together. Whether Jung Chung-rae's victory can meet this standard is a point that many party members and voters should carefully consider. The party leadership election is a critical turning point that goes beyond a simple leadership choice, determining whether the Democratic Party can continue on the path of reform or be trapped in vested-interest politics once again. If Jung Chung-rae is elected, we must be wary of the possibility that the power struggle within the Democratic Party, discussions on constitutional amendments, and subtle attempts to check Lee Jae-myung will begin in earnest. Through this party leadership election, the Democratic Party stands at a crossroads of whether it will show a true will for change and innovation, or settle for old political practices of the past. The wise choice of party members and the public is more important than ever.
